MOVADO'S HISTORY

In 1881, Achilles Ditesheim, a young entrepreneur, opened a small workshop in La Chaux-de- Fonds, Switzerland, at the heart of the Swiss watch industry. In 1905 he renamed the company Movado, an Esperanto word meaning “always in motion,” and defined the spirit of the company forever. This dedication to progress has carried Movado onwards and, with more than 100 patents and 200 international awards for watch design and time technology, Movado continues innovating into the future. 

THE MUSEUM DIAL

Movado’s most iconic design, the Museum Dial, is a masterpiece of minimalism. Created by Nathan George Horwitt in 1947, the dial was inspired by a marriage of the timeless and the contemporary, combining the oldest form of time-telling—the sundial— with the groundbreaking modernist concept of simplicity of form by placing a single, elegant dot at 12 o’clock to symbolize the sun at high noon. In 1960, New York City’s Museum of Modern Art recognized the design genius of the piece and accepted it into the permanent collection, making it the first watch dial to receive such an honor.
